After Dark
Puerto Rico is party central. You'll find everything from Bohemian coffeehouses to upscale wine clubs and outdoor plaza parties in farmer's markets around the island. With countless bars, pubs, casinos and restaurants that turn into nightspots after hours, and a perpetual string of musical celebrations and special events to choose from, there's never a shortage of action. During the week, the night scene begins to heat up not long after sunset, while on weekends and holidays, the partying spirit kicks up a notch as the clock approaches midnight. On a typical weekend in the metropolitan area, traffic slows to a crawl as locals and visitors dressed to kill hit the streets to socialize, dance, and see and be seen until the wee hours.

The passion that pulsates through Puerto Rico's music scene speaks volumes of this spirited society that loves to share a good time. On most any night of the week, you can find plenty of places to practice your merengue moves or put some sizzle in your salsa step, but there's also a vast variety of other musical styles, events and entertainment to be found. Whether you seek Afro-Caribbean beats, hip-hop rhythms, classic rock-n-roll or smooth jazz, you won't have to look far to find some. If it's world-class entertainment you crave, you're in the right place.

Nightclubs, Bars and Pubs
The island's nightclub scene is loaded with intoxicating beats, electrifying sounds and pure energy, and there's a vast selection to suit every age group, social set and desire. Major hotels and resorts are usually the best places to find the hottest salsa dance bands, and Old San Juan seems to have the dance clubs that attract the younger crowd with house, hip-hop and reggaeton music. There are plenty of pubs in and around the metropolitan areas that hum with the sound of classic rock and Spanish rock music, and special jazz nights are held in lots of establishments in the tourist districts. While the greatest concentration of nightclubs and pubs is in the metropolitan San Juan areas of Old San Juan, Isla Verde, Santurce and Condado, there's also a thriving night scene in Ponce and Mayagüez, where several popular hotspots cater to the areas' large college-age populations.

Concerts, Classical Music, Opera, Theatre and Ballet
The new Puerto Rico Coliseum in the Hato Rey district of San Juan is one of the top state-of-the-art entertainment venues in the United States and hosts an exciting array of world-class music concerts and sporting events. There are also several smaller coliseums and concert venues around the island including the Luis A. Ferré Center for the Performing Arts in San Juan, which features concerts by the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra and many well-known international musical artists, as well as performances by both opera and ballet companies. The University of Puerto Rico and the Tapia Theater present several avant-garde and Broadway-style productions in Spanish and English.

Casinos
There are about a dozen casinos in the San Juan area and several others in Ponce, Humacao and Mayagüez, where visitors and locals come together to court Lady Luck. It may not be Las Vegas, but Puerto Rico's casinos are big business and they pack in all the games, glitz and glamour as other big-time gaming destinations. Typical games include blackjack, roulette, craps, Caribbean stud poker and pai gow, which is a combination of American and Chinese poker with cards and dice. There are also plenty of slot machines in every denomination. Most casinos are open by noon and close around 4 a.m. These establishments, all of which are associated with large resort hotels, expect their patrons to be well-dressed and many require jackets for men.
