“Our
island is a place that embraces the senses...from aquamarine Caribbean
waters to rugged mountain paths to tropical rain forests...Puerto
Rico is a contrast in environment that always holds a surprise around
every corner.” The Hon. Sila M. Calderon, former Governor
of Puerto Rico.
There is no city in the Caribbean that can hold a candle to Old San Juan when it comes to this spirited community's dramatic natural setting, historic architecture and cultural institutions. Nearly four centuries ago, the first stone of this classic fortress city was set in place and today it is counted among the World Heritage Sites, which include such places of distinction as the pyramids of Egypt and the Great Wall of China. Its cobblestone streets, tropical-fruit-colored buildings, wrought-iron balconies and Romanesque arches maintain the look and feel of the once-Spanish colonial city.
A walking tour of this seven-square-block area is the best way to experience Old San Juan, which is full of museums, galleries, historic sites, restaurants and shops. If exploring on foot doesn't appeal to you, there's a free trolley that operates throughout the Old City during the daylight hours. And though it bustles during the day, Old San Juan really hops at night, when its restaurants, pubs, clubs and sidewalk cafes fill with people of all ages enjoying the island's liveliest social scene.
